Gillis Memorial
Lodge expansion officially opens

June 29, 2010
ELDON—
It was standing room only at the nursing care facility Dr.
John M. Gillis Memorial Lodge on Sunday as members of the
community turned out for the official opening ceremonies and
open house for the recently expanded rural facility.
The afternoon event kicked off with a lineup of speakers,
including co-owner Douglas MacKenzie, Belfast-Murray River
MLA Charlie McGeoghegan, and Jennifer Penny, Dr. John M.
Gillis Memorial Lodge director of nursing.
“We hope the Dr. John M. Gillis Memorial Lodge will provide
health care for many years to come,” said MacKenzie, who
thanked those in attendance for their 23 years of continued
support.
With an official ribbon-cutting ceremony held outdoors in
front of the 10,000-square-foot addition, visitors were
welcomed to stay for refreshments followed by tours of the
Belfast facility.
Completed in March 2010, the expansion of the nursing care
facility enabled owners Douglas and Joan MacKenzie to add 19
care beds, bringing the total number of occupants to 81
persons, as well
as new features, including a
modern bathing station, a state-of-the-art Alzheimer’s unit
complete with sweeping views, ample walking space and
secured access to the outdoors, a designated palliative care
room and two apartments.
Pre-existing amenities were also upgraded during the
renovation to include an enlarged kitchen and a new nursing
station. MacKenzie said the addition is in response to
the high demand for nursing care beds in rural Prince Edward
Island, and by working in conjunction with local hospitals,
the Dr. John Gillis Memorial Lodge aims to provide seniors
and the disabled with a local option for nursing care
