CHURCHES & FUNERAL HOME
PROJECTS
St. Mark's Presbyterian Church
Charlottetown, Prince
Edward Island
It’s not always a good
omen when a snowstorm hits in the middle of an important
event, but the congregation of St. Mark’s Presbyterian
church didn’t mind on Easter Sunday, 2001. That was the
day the churchgoers moved to their bigger, more modern
new church on Tamarac Avenue in Charlottetown. MacLean
Construction built the chapel, which Rev. Dr. Tom
Hamilton said was needed for a growing community.
“The congregation love it. It was much needed, and most
of the people who go to the fundraisers don’t go to the
church.” The old church held about 110 people, but the
new building can fit up to 250, with beautiful calm
colours and modern design.
MacLean’s has constructed many churches around
Charlottetown, including Central Christian on Kent
Street and the new addition to St. Pius X. Their
experience made MacLean’s a valuable member of the
design team, said St. Mark’s architect Bill Chandler.
“Work was completed on time, on budget and everyone was
very happy with the results of the work. It was a team
effort with [ourselves] and the church, and MacLean’s
was a part of that team.”
Hamilton cites the building committee co-chair, Buddy
Myers, and MacLean’s project manager Claude Gallant as
playing large roles in the construction success. “Claude
was great to work with. Everything went according to
schedule”.
Hamilton and his wife, Paula, share the ministerial
duties at St. Mark’s, which hosts many groups and
funeral homes who use the facilities. The church is
built on one floor, which makes it more accessible for
people with disabilities or injuries. After only six
years, Hamilton said the expanding congregation may make
it necessary to expand again soon. He said he has good
memories from working with the company on the
construction. “We’d recommend MacLean’s. They were
thorough and certainly went the extra mile. They took
care to respect it as a place of worship.”
