Construction Institutional Projects
Andrews of Stratford, Stratford, PE
If Andrews of Stratford could receive a
rating from Canada Select, they would have a good chance
of hitting the five-star mark. This must have been what
MacLean’s Construction had in mind while they were
building the community care facility on Shakespeare
Drive in Stratford.
From the outside, the facility appears to be a small
island village and is just as magnificent on the inside
and around the grounds. MacLean’s began work on the
project around October, 2004, which meant the company
had to make sure the foundation was in place before the
ground froze for the winter.
David Lopes, who worked on the project with N46
Architecture, said the company maintained their
professionalism throughout the entire build. “Timing was
critical, so there was a lot of coordination required,”
he said. “They followed it right through to the end.”
MacLean’s was an integral part of the team as a whole,
he added. “They were always on time and on budget and
willing to work to accommodate you. They’re team players
concerned about doing a good job. The quality of the
finished product is right up there as well.”
Instead of many facilities like it, Andrews is made up
of smaller groupings of rooms centered around a common
area. MacLean’s and the architects wanted to avoid a
monotonous, single-corridor institution. The design
recalls an English courtyard, complete with a Main
Street featuring a beauty
salon, a corner store, a
doctor’s office and a library. Every English village
needs roads, and the corridors of Andrews are named
after actual P.E.I. roads around the area: Keppoch,
Kinlock, Mason and Battery Point. Each feature specific
views and a unique character.
One of MacLean’s flagship buildings also features a
restaurant-style dining room with cozy nooks next to
fireplaces for private family gatherings. Massage
therapy and live entertainment are also offered at the
facility which opened its doors to residents in June
2005.
