Outdoor Junior Tennis Championships
May 24, 2006
CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI – Mayor Clifford Lee announced today,
along with Tennis PEI President, Nancy Connolly and Tennis
PEI Technical Director, Brian Hall that the 2006 Atlantic
Outdoor Junior Tennis Championships will be hosted in
Charlottetown from July 16th-22nd. Tennis PEI also announced
that MacLean Construction is the title sponsor of the
Championships.
The week-long event will be hosted at the beautiful Victoria
Park tennis courts and will feature 80 -100 of Atlantic
Canada’s top tennis players ranging from 10-18 years of age.
Participants are looking forward to the Charlottetown event,
as the Victoria Park tennis courts are considered to be one
of the premiere venues in the region.
Mayor Lee stated, “I am delighted that Charlottetown has
been awarded the hosting-rights to the 2006 Atlantic Outdoor
Junior Tennis Championships. Charlottetown is a strong and
successful event-hosting destination. It’s the provincial
sport organizations, volunteers and sponsors, their
inspiration, and their spirit that ensures the success of
these events. Our community takes great pride in providing a
quality experience for competitors and fans alike with the
staging events such as the Outdoor Tennis Championships.”
Nancy Connolly said, “It is always exciting to host the
Atlantics. The best tennis players in Atlantic Canada will
be here competing for national spots. Home court advantage
is just that - your own courts and your own cheering
section! This year is particularly exciting for the U-12 and
U-14 players as they begin preparing for Canada Games 2009
which will be in P.E.I!”
“The Atlantic Junior Tennis Championships is the largest and
most prestigious junior tennis event in Atlantic Canada,”
said Brian Hall. “Victoria Park in Charlottetown, this years
site, is the favorite in the Atlantics four-year rotation,
with its park location, on the water, new club house and 6
courts in great condition, it would be hard to beat anywhere
in Canada. This year with play scheduled daily between 12
noon and 7pm the high level of tennis will be available for
spectators after work and there will still be courts
available for public play in the morning and in the evening
as tournament play finishes up.”
The City continually pursues opportunities with partners for
Charlottetown to host regional, national and international
sporting and cultural events. The City recognizes the value
of the events sector and is placing high priority on major
events to stimulate tourism, economic and community growth.
